Mark Kaufman, Director of Public Safety for the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center shows fire department personnel the Convention Center’s Public Safety Dispatch Center during the tour.

In May, members of the New Orleans Fire Department’s Second District toured the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center to become familiar with its fire prevention, detection, and emergency response initiatives.

NOFD members were welcomed by the President and GM of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Michael Sawaya, who thanked them for their service to not only the convention center, but to the entire city of New Orleans. Personnel attending the tour were then taken to the back-of-house areas of the convention center to better understand the building’s multitude of fire prevention and suppression measures. Firefighters toured the convention center’s physical plant, fire pump stations, loading docks, Public Safety Dispatch Center, and other safety-critical areas. Each stop on the tour was designed to help first responders better understand the layout of critical areas of the convention center in case of an emergency.

“We were honored to give a tour of our facilities to the New Orleans Fire Department,” said Mark Kaufman, Director of Public Safety for the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. “The safety of our guests is our number one priority, and we are always looking for new ways to assist first responders in any way we can.”

These safety-focused initiatives will continue later in 2018 when members of the NOPD, NOFD, and EMS will be invited to participate in a mock-emergency simulation at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

First off, if you are going to a game or concert, don’t expect staff from the Enterprise Center to pick you up. That said, the Scottrade Center in St. Louis has changed its name to the Enterprise Center. The venue is home to the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League and plays host to a myriad of events.

The team announced on May 21 that its 15-year arena naming rights agreement with St. Louis-based Enterprise Holdings, which operates Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent a Car and National Car Rental.

The arena is in the middle of a $64 million renovation but remains one of the country’s busiest. The City of St. Louis owns the venue through a 1992 public-private partnership.

Terms of the deal were not made available. The arena has been known as the Scottrade Center since 2006. The Enterprise Center name change takes effect July 1.

After a Sunday of golf, touring, bourbon, and beer, what better way to roll into Monday than with a history lesson? Be there for our seventh annual history lesson with Robert Long and Scott Crossfield, The History of Toronto and Its Theatres: A to ZED.

Join Scott and Robert as they, again, humorously give us a look back in time at the development, and sometimes demise, of theatre buildings in our host city of Toronto. This is a perennial favorite with attendees, and is the session that sets the stage for the performing arts track sessions. Be sure to arrive early and grab your seat for this always popular session.

You, as an IAVM member, are our most important asset. Without your commitment to the association and to the venue management industry, we wouldn’t be here. Because of your support, we are featuring member profiles in our I Am Venue Management series. If you are interested in participating in the I Am Venue Management series, please visit http://www.iavm.org/i-am-venue-management-share-your-story.

If I wasn’t doing this I’d be an: Interior designer. Or a novelist.

Most impressive person I’ve ever met: Professor Bob Perry from Cornell. I loved the time I spent with him both on campus and off. His mind was so brilliant, engaged, and sharp, and he always fascinated me with his “Big Bold ideas done in an elegant style.” Whenever I was with him I saw a million new ways to approach everything. Anything became possible.

I unwind by: Reading … everything around me. I read 22 magazines a month cover-to-cover, a couple books, and even billboards on my way to work. It’s an unwind for me but a curse for the staff who always get articles in their inbox from me.

On my desk right now is: Jars of candy … lots of jars of candy! If I buy it and see it, I don’t eat it. Odd, I know. But the best thing about it is that the staff stops to take it, and I get those few minutes to connect with people who might not wander in otherwise.

My favorite IAVM program/conference/event/session I ever attended was: Venue Management School changed everything. From then on, I knew this was a career for me, that I would love the industry, and that I would be a “lifer.” Now, I have the opportunity to teach there, and every year I return recharged having learned so much from the other teachers and students.

If I were on the other side of the seats, I’d be a: Dancer.

One trait an up-and-coming venue manager should have is: A take-a-risk attitude. Try new things to make our industry continuously develop, always strive to improve, and while you can try different venue types and cities. It will bring amazing experiences to your life and develop friends all over the world.

How do you plan to help elevate the profession? My three closest industry colleagues and I started a woman’s mentoring group a few years back. I hope to be able to keep helping the next generation to create the incredible bonds and resources I have been fortunate enough to enjoy.
I just became a Trustee for the Foundation this year. Knowing I am working to provide scholarships is one of the best ways I can think of to elevate our profession.

Where do you see new growth opportunities in the profession? Since I primarily focus on the convention industry, I see security being our new growth area. Unlike arenas where you can control who comes in with a ticket, we are an open space like a mall with a multitude of doors. Meeting planners are going to have to get their mind around securing events and meetings in a different way in the coming years.

How do you stay current with industry trends and developments? Attend conferences and continuously read on sites such as LinkedIn, IAVM and PCMA. I love the news articles PCMA sends every morning. With that said, connecting and sharing information and ideas with your colleagues is really a great way to explore trends and ideas that have both succeeded and failed.

Who are three people you’d invite to a dinner party and why? Steven Colbert, Oprah Winfrey, and Matthew McConaughey. The combination is inspiring, funny, and brilliant. Matthew has an amazing quirky mind, as well as a fascinating movie career. If I can have a fourth I throw in Michael Bublé for a little dinner music and Canadian perspective.

In support of LGBT Pride Month, AEG is creating awareness around diversity and inclusion with the release of its “Infinite Diversity” video that underscores the organization’s belief in unity and diversity and can be seen here.

Newly launched, the campaign encourages employees and fans to view the video and share it on their social channels via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #BetterAsOne. The program promotes AEG’s belief that its strength comes through diversity of thought and ideas.

Dan Beckerman, CEO and President of AEG, said, “At AEG, we embrace our differences with regards to race, gender, gender identity, age, national origin, disabilities, politics, sexual orientation, education, and religion, and are focused on building a culture that consistently promotes diversity of thought. Diversity and inclusion are more than a corporate policy — they are embedded in everything we do, not only because it is the ‘right thing to do,’ but because it adds value to our organization. We are proud to celebrate diversity during Pride Month and throughout the entire year.”

In addition to promoting its “Infinite Diversity,” video on social media, on June 5 AEG hosted a discussion with Gregory Lewis, executive director and CEO of True Colors Fund, at the GRAMMY Museum at LA LIVE for its U.S. employee workforce that focuses on the work that True Colors Fund is doing to combat homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth.

Last Thursday night, 294 excited students (largest student attendance in the history of VMS) attending VMS and VMSGI officially finished up a spectacular week of networking and learning and celebrated the graduation of year two students and recognition of GI students completing their program in Glessner Hall. There was also a rotation of class reps, recognition of interns, and changing of leadership of the Board of Regents finishing their year of service.

Cheryl Swanson, CVE rolled off as Past Chair, Bob Hunter, CVE moves into Past Chair. Todd Hunt, CVE takes the helm as Chair, Phil Jordan, CVE steps up to First Vice Chair, and Paul Turner, CVE, CSSP steps in as the new Second Vice Chair. After a video of Ray Ward was shown, Michael Marion, CVE was awarded the Ray W. Ward award, being recognized for his contributions to the Venue Management School.

The Regents, Instructors, and IAVM Staff spend a full twelve months in preparation for the coming year’s school giving selfless amounts of time, offering their industry experience/leadership, and time away from their venue responsibilities to place Venue Management School in expert hands for future success.

Bob Hunter, CVE chaired the 2018 school with great success, which generated a very active atmosphere during the week and especially at the graduation ceremony. Bob’s passion and commitment to the school showed itself in many ways, and from the lectern on his last night of chair, his emotions were visible and ran deep. Job Well Done Robert Hunter, CVE.

Joe Gerstandt To Share The Power Of Inclusive Leadership At VenueConnect

$
0
0

Inclusion seems to be a hot word right now. Just what does it mean? Allow the following, taken from the website of speaker and author Joe Gerstandt to provide a solid base to answer: While difference is a property of relationships, inclusion is what we do with it. How do we respond to the difference that we’ve created? Do we allow it in? And, how do we utilize it? Our actions and reactions can shape our personal and professional networks.

Now that we have a better snippet of definition, you will want to be sure to attend Joe’s session on “Inclusive Leadership” at VenueConnect in Toronto. These days inclusion really is not an option, but is necessary for success at all levels of an organization. Why?

“Leaders play a critical role in providing an inclusive employee experience, and research suggests that the wrong kind of leadership is one of the biggest barriers to inclusion,” Gerstandt says. “Not only is inclusion poorly understood, and often misunderstood by managers, inclusive leadership is simply not the path of least resistance.

“Even if we see the importance and value of inclusion intellectually, in the moment it makes life a lot easier if everyone just thinks and acts in the same ways. Inclusion is hard work and is about much more than having good intentions. Being an inclusive leader is not about ‘getting it,’ ’embracing it,’ or having a killer business case for it … you have to actually do stuff.”

It is here where Gerstandt is equipped to help attendees figure out exactly what that “stuff” is, with his background in bringing greater clarity, action, and impact to organizational diversity and inclusion efforts.

That background also include work with Fortune 100 corporations, small non-profits, and everything in between. He speaks at numerous conferences and summits, and blogs at joegerstandt.com. He is a featured contributor for the Workforce Diversity Network Expert Forum and his insights have been published in Diversity Best Practices, Diversity Executive, HR Executive, The Diversity Factor, The American Diversity Report, the Corporate Recruiting Leadership Journal, Associations Now, other print and on-line journals and he co-authored the book Social Gravity: Harnessing the Natural Laws of Relationships.

Gerstandt grew up on a family farm in northwest Iowa, served four years in the United States Marine Corps, including participation in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, attended Iowa State University and then spent six years working in management and business development for technology and communication companies. He then made a career change and went to work for a grassroots non-profit organization, and this is where he found himself drawn to issues related to diversity and inclusion and then became actively involved in that work.

Be prepared to go back home from this session with several key takeaways including a more tangible understanding of what inclusion is and how it can impact performance, exploration of dynamics which make inclusion difficult, including practices of traditional management, and to be introduced to a basic toolkit for inclusive leadership consisting of knowledge, behavior, and practices.

Michael Marion, CVE, Earns Deserved Ray Ward Award

Turns out that 2018 is becoming quite a year for Michael Marion, CVE, general manager of the Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Marion ascends to IAVM’s highest volunteer position next month at VenueConnect in Toronto when he becomes the chairman of the board of IAVM, joining an illustrious list of predecessors.

But before Marion gets to accept the gavel from Doug Booher, CVE, and make some remarks in Toronto, first came the little matter of his being named the 2018 recipient of the distinguished Ray Ward Award given during the recently concluded Venue Management School (VMS) at Oglebay. Actually, the award is a huge matter and named after an industry icon in Ray Ward. This year’s award carries extra significance as Ward passed away in early May.

The award is bestowed upon an individual associated with VMS whose dedicated service and extraordinary contributions over a period of at least six years have resulted in significant and long lasting improvements to the overall success and quality of the school. The award was created and initially presented to namesake and industry icon Ray Ward in August 1996.

“I was sitting at the table the night of graduation and Bob Hunter, VMS chair, started talking about the recipient,” Marion said. “I had no idea it was me, but when he said the recipient had been teaching nine years, I thought to myself, ‘I’ve been here 9 years, umm.’ Once he started talking about Mississippi State, the cuss jar and the fact I was friends with Saved By the Bell’s Mr. Belding, I figured it out.

“It was quite moving. Ray taught me when I was in school in the early 90’s. After coming to teach, I sought him out and made a point of getting him to tell me some Bill Graham stories. He was super committed to VMS and when I went through the chairs, he sent me a file of documents of ideas that he had collected over the years to improve the school. I was saddened to hear of his passing, but I know his legacy will live on at VMS. As overwhelmed as I was, I did have a sad moment that I couldn’t call Ray and let him know.

Marion is also very respectful of the list of winners, the school itself, and what it all means to an industry he loves.

“I feel I am in rarefied air with the other winners,” he said. “The folks who have led VMS are a special bunch who have done so much to advance the venue industry. The fact that such a great program is put on by volunteers with support from IAVM staff speaks to the commitment of the Regents. My annual trek to Wheeling is one of the highlights of my year. The energy of the students and instructors charges my batteries like nothing else.”

“I have always been a mission-driven kind of guy,” he said. “As a nonprofit, we’re raising money to expose children in northwest Arkansas to the performing arts and art in general. That was afforded to me as a child, and I want to make sure that happens for everybody.”
